Certification matters. But certification only comes at the end.

For renewable hydrogen developers, this creates an important challenge: how do you demonstrate RFNBO readiness, credibility, and market preparedness while a project is still under development?

As the European hydrogen market matures, compliance evaluation is becoming much more than a regulatory exercise. It provides valuable insight into a project’s preparedness for certification and helps developers identify the actions needed to meet RFNBO requirements before commissioning.

That is why DH2 energy partnered with HINICIO to conduct a certification readiness assessment of Hysencia, its flagship renewable hydrogen project, under the CertifHy EU RFNBO Voluntary Scheme.

The outcome is highly encouraging:

-The project is on track to become RED-compliant Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO), with this status expected to be achieved upon commissioning.
-Up to 2,043 tonnes of RFNBO hydrogen production per year.
-91% greenhouse gas emissions reduction compared with the RED fossil fuel comparator (94 gCO₂eq/MJ).
-GHG emissions of 8.4 gCO₂eq/MJ, well below the RED threshold of 28.2 gCO₂eq/MJ.

Beyond compliance, the assessment helped identify the operational, traceability, and certification actions needed to strengthen the project’s readiness for market entry.

Combined with Hysencia’s success under the European Hydrogen Bank Auction, this assessment marks another important milestone for the project and another sign of the growing maturity of Europe’s renewable hydrogen market.

Thank you to the Hinicio team for their valuable support and collaboration throughout this assessment.
